A smart move on VIA’s part indeed. So how do we find the MSI as a whole? Windows 98, while having little testing on this motherboard, seems to be OK. You have to be pushing the current memory bandwidth limits on a previous chipset to really see the difference. For the average home user playing a few games here and there and using office application on something like the AMD platform, the upgrade doesn’t make sense really. The capacitor placement fouls the ability of the retention mechanism to work well and you have to resort to poking at the lever with something in an attempt to make it budge. While I think comparing temperatures, even across identical motherboards is a futile exercise, being able to measure CPU temperature as accurately as possible on the board in use is very important and the MSI can’t hope to do this unfortunately.

It also seems like the BIOS setup is critical. The time now is The manual makes not reference to the procedure to audko a working motherboard if the SmartKey is lost you can use a new SmartKey as long as you provide the correct password and the password is then copied to the new SmartKey and you enter the wrong password 3 times, locking the BIOS and the system completely.
Thank you Allen for your help and advice. The KT is almost universally regarded as quite slow, hard to make work and it’s generally unloved. Find all posts by Allen Hallada. Can’t install PTLE 6. Taking a look at the picture of the motherboard and starting at the top, we can see that the ATX connector is to the left of audo CPU socket, right in the corner.
This is an optional feature and one we were very glad to see MSI had included on the board.

Software is also installed on the operating system that stops the OS from functioning properly if the correct SmartKey isn’t detected. When VIA first announced their DDR chipset the KT, the whole hardware community was gearing up for quite an intense battle among the chipset auddio. I wish these extra connectors would run parallel to the vertical edge but that’s only personal preference.
Applications that shift a lot of data between main memory and the CPU will be the obvious benefactors with the KTA. Well let’s take a look at the chipset specs before we make our way to MSI’s implementation of it. It’s the little things all rolled into one that make the MSI stand out for me. Finally before we hit the pretty pictures, the tests are performed at the default rpo2 speed of Mhz 9 x and Mhz 9 x showing the improvements to be gained both in clock speed and memory bandwidth via a higher front side bus clock.
One of the biggest selling points of this new wave of KTA boards is the increased performance.

They connect to a header on the motherboard and mirror the 4 LED’s above the audio connectors on the ATX backplane that are visible if you open the case. Send a private message to Laquesis. MSI also had the foresight to stick down two clear pieces of plastic beneath each of the 2 center socket clips where you attach heatsinks. Right now I’m about to buy my computer but I really need to be very sure of my configuration and the posible incompatibilities it might have with the Digi Find all posts by Lou Miller.
One AGP 4X slot. Thank you so much indeed for your help. When the KT chipset was eventually released, it was met with quite a bit of disappointment. Here are the official specifications. I was a bit sceptical of its position at first, but, in my case at least, it seems to get the ATX connector out of the way very well seeing as though the ATX connector is the most bulky connector you’ll attach to a motherboard and also the most inflexible making a poor connector placement an extra hassle.
The immense room around the socket will please users of waterblocks, Swiftech’s and VapoChill units.
Only glaring bad spots should be noted and the MSI has none. So what can we draw from the following numbers?
Otherwise, thumbs up to MSI. This is never really the ideal situation and definitely not the best for a chipset which does quite warm during testing.
Of course, this board isn’t perfect, there are a few things I would have liked to have audoi done like removing the AMR and dropping in an extra PCI slot. A couple of BIOS tweaks and a general going over and that should be that.
